Giampiero Tagliaferri – From Milan To Los Angeles

Giampiero Tagliaferre

Giampiero Tagliaferri’s architectural and design practice straddles the two worlds of Milan and Los Angeles, two cities which shine through in all aspects of his work and it is this duality which has forged his distinctive styling.

From Milan, Tagliaferri’s home for 20 years, he embraces the split, dualistic and often contradictory nature so characteristic of the city – its grandiosity and reserve, ostentation and sobriety. A city which, so badly damaged during the war, combines the grounding of antiquity with the regrowth and rebirth of the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s provides fertile soil for Giampiero design philosophy.

From Los Angeles, Tagliaferri’s second home, comes an appreciation of simplicity and light, drawing inspiration from the colours and shapes of the Southern California landscape around the city and, of course, the irrepressible optimism of the American West.

While it may seem contradictory, it is these very contradictions which allow Giampiero to weave his holistic approach to architecture and design into complex, nuanced spaces which build narratives and celebrate the rituals of daily life.
Whether it’s a residential, hospitality or commercial space, Giampiero’s irrepressible aesthetic sensibility is fully expressed, weaving these many elements together into an emotionally charged design language which, while clearly inspired by what has gone before, is uniquely Tagliaferri.

Collector, Designer, Traveller

Beyond the clear love for the classic styles and contradictions of his twin home cities which inspire Tagliaferri’s design work is his love for collectable furniture, gathered from his travels around the world. This obsession with craftsmanship is brought to bear on each design.

Drawing from such a wide pool of inspirational sources allows Giampiero Tagliaferri to condense these disparate, complex threads into a deceptively simple style which celebrates the rhythms and patterns of daily living and honours and enhances each space’s unique sense of place.

Whether residential, hospitality or commercial, a densely researched and narrative driven approach allows Tagliaferri to weave a kaleidoscopic array of colours, materials, textures, artworks and architectural features into a space which celebrates intellectual curiosity and engenders the idea of a life well-lived.

This multisensory approach has won Giampiero plaudits and devotees from pop stars to tech titans, art mavens to tastemakers, from Bel Air, Malibu, Beverly Hills, San Francisco and Las Vegas to Venice and, naturally, his home, Milan.

 Past Projects

Giampiero Tagliaferre Project

With an interior design practice spanning continents, Giampiero’s work, be it residential or commercial, started as a natural extension of another job – Creative Director of the ultra-chic eyeglass company Oliver Peoples.
It was here, while designing glasses for the Italy-based, Luxottica-owned brand that Tagliaferre discovered his love of interiors and the narratives which they can spin. Under his watch, Oliver Peoples expanded from 9 boutiques to 41, each bearing the distinctive Tagliaferri stamp.

Expanding his role from product design, through PR and into designing the brand’s distinctive interiors brought Giampiero Tagliaferri to where we find him today. This pathway has furnished him with not only the artistic and aesthetic flair but the administrative ability to take designs from the conceptual to completion.

This eye for detail permeates each Giampiero Tagliaferri space with each of his diverse influences synthesised into a whole which is equal parts celebration of what has gone before, what is yet to be and, perhaps most vitally, how a life well-lived is lived now.

Each detail provides a nod to the social, historical and architectural nuances of the space which Giampiero so carefully crafts to house the unique personality of each client, be they individual or brand.
Above all, Giampiero’s obsession with beauty and quality in the service of comfort shines forth from each and every element of his distinctive designs. Each space is not only a beatific celebration, it is firmly grounded in the concept of the lives which play out within its walls.

Tagliaferri X Minotti

This season, Giampiero Tagliaferri brings his considerable talents to bear as he takes his rightful place in the creative flow of the Minotti Studio alongside names like Nendo, Inoda+Sveje, GamFratesi, Marcio Kogan and his fellow new inductee Hannes Peer. Some of the pieces Giampiero has created include the Supermoon Sofa, Pattie Armchair, Diagramma Coffee Table and the Jason Sideboard.

Together, under the direction of the Minotti family, these titans have harnessed their full powers, combining them into the gestalt of design and craftsmanship that the Minotti Studio is so proud to represent as we enter the 2024 season.
The first place to discover the results of this creative amalgamation is at the 2024 Collection’s debut, the Salone De Mobile, Milano 2024.
